3 Big Ideas for Montana Math! April 2018 Edition

Big Idea #1 – Census Bureau Statistics Lessons

Starting your statistics or measurement and data unit? Looking for real and interesting data? Check out the Census Bureau’s math lessons for grades K-12. Have your students use fractions to compare amusement parks by state, use immigrant data to create bar graphs and line graphs with appropriate scales or even develop, justify, and evaluate conjectures about the relationship between education attainment and marriage age. The Census Bureau has created student friendly data and lesson plans to enhance your statistical units! Check out their state facts for students!

Big Idea #2 – EdReady College Connection

EdReady Montana has collaborated with UM and MSU to help prepare students for their first year college math course. Students who complete 20 hours of EdReady and scored a 90% were qualified to either retake their math placement exam or enter into a college level math course. Come learn more about this partnership today from 3:45-4:30 pm during the Virtual Math Community webinar with Ryan Schrenk. We also will be discussing best practices around using EdReady for the remainder of the year to help prepare students for the next grade.

Big Idea #3 – Looking to add growth mindset and productive struggle into your classroom?

Join us for Growth Mindset and Productive Struggle workshops across Montana. Participants will learn how a growth mindset affects achievement in mathematics; learn instructional strategies to promote student perseverance and productive struggle while increasing students’ math skills and knowledge; engage in math activities; and discuss strategies that can increase all students’ enjoyment and learning of mathematics. Leave with a toolbox of resources to build growth mindsets and eliminate the “I can’t do this” from your classroom. You also will leave with access to math tasks and learn about scaffolds that build perseverance in your students. Sign up today!
