This is a reminder that the Child Count application closes Friday, November 18. If I can be of assistance in helping you achieve a correct Child Count list and submit by the deadline, please let me know. If you have submitted, you may disregard this e-mail.
The following information must be in AIM for students to appear on Child Count:
• a completed, locked IEP that is active on Child Count day;
• a completed, locked Evaluation Report with an age-appropriate disability;
• an age-appropriate Setting of Service; and
• an enrollment on or prior to the Child Count date.
The Child Count Help Manual (found under Help at the top of the application) contains more detailed information about verifying your Child Count list.
The link to the application is: https://apps.opi.mt.gov/SPEDApplicationsPortal/frmLogin.aspx.
If you are an assigned user, your user name is generally the first letter of your first name and your entire last name. If you don’t remember your password, click “Forgot password?” If this is your first time to log in, click “New User?” and the system will e-mail a password to you. Copy and paste the e-mailed password into the password area rather than attempting to type it. After you log in the Exiting User Manual may be found under the Help tab at the top of the page.
Overview of the Child Count Data Verification
Each year the U.S. Department of Education requires all states to report a count of students, ages 3-21, who were in special education on a day that falls between October 1 and December 1. In order for the OPI to provide this information to the USDE, all Montana school districts must report a list of students who were in special education on the first Monday in October (Montana’s official Child Count day). The Child Count Data Verification application is provided as the avenue for districts to submit their special education information to the OPI. The application opens mid-September so districts can begin reviewing their list of special education students; however, lists cannot be finalized and submitted until Child Count day. The application closes the third Friday in November.
