Big Idea #2: History & Current Events

Favorite Elementary Lessons from Montana Teachers

Read the Teaching Montana History Blog to learn about Montana history lessons that your fellow teachers across the state love!

The Montana Historical Society recently asked teachers to describe a lesson, project or resource they taught that they would definitely make time for this upcoming year. From Charlie Russell lessons, to Indian Ed learning activities, to place-based learning resources, teachers shared a wealth of Montana-based resources to support students in learning about where they live.

You can also see high school and middle school responses to this question on earlier blog posts.

Teaching about Protest: Dakota Access Pipeline
The National Geographic Education Blog offers teachers a toolkit to present the recent protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline in light of Native American history and the tradition of protest in America. Read Dakota Access Pipeline: What You Need to Know to present the full story to your students.

Big Idea #3: Do You Know about the Lunch-Buddy App?

Sixteen year-old, tech savvy junior, Natalie Hampton, has developed a "Sit With Us" app to give students a judgement free way to find lunch mates without the fear of being rejected. Having been a frequent target of the "mean girls" in middle school, Natalie wanted to prevent other kids having to go through what she did. Explore the app for your school, and read her story of actively taking a stand against bullying in the Washington Post.
