JOINT NOTICE FROM THE BOARD OF PUBLIC EDUCATION AND THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
The updated bus standards adopted by the Board of Public Education and implemented by the Office of Public Instruction will go into effect on October 13, 2017. The Board and the OPI have worked together to establish this effective date, which is different from, and later than, the date distributed by e-mail yesterday.
The updated bus standards can be accessed at http://opi.mt.gov/pdf/PupilTransport/17BusStandards_Proposed.pdf. Please note that this update does not change the already-existing requirement that districts have their school buses inspected at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the first semester. ARM 10.7.101(2)(e).
In summary, school bus inspections conducted prior to October 13, 2017, must meet the current bus standards. Inspections conducted on or after October 13, 2017, must meet the updated bus standards. The Montana Highway Patrol will be notified of the changed effective date for these new standards.
We thank you all for working to keep our students safe.
Board Chair Sharon Carroll and Superintendent Elsie Arntzen
