The 2019 U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship Program will soon open

August 13, 2018

Last year, the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) made changes to the scholarship selection process, so please read this notice in full.

Two students from Montana will be selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship each along with a one-week, all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for Washington Week, March 2-9, 2019. Visit the OPI Scholarship webpage at for more information regarding the scholarship.

The scholarship for high school juniors and seniors opens Monday, August 27, 2018, at which time the application will be available for printing or downloading. The application will be removed from the OPI website on Friday, September 28, 2018.

The deadline for receipt of applications to the OPI is Monday, October 1, 2018. All materials must be electronically date stamped (email) or postmarked no later than 11:59 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2018.

If a student from your school is selected to proceed as a semifinalist to a telephone interview, I will contact the student between October 24 and 30 to arrange a date and time for the interview. I anticipate the phone interviews will be conducted between November 1 and November 15. The judges will select two delegates to receive the scholarship and attend Washington Week. Two alternates will be selected as well. In the event that one of the delegates forfeits the scholarship, an alternate will be awarded the scholarship and expected to attend Washington Week. The Hearst Foundation will notify the successful delegates and alternates in early December 2018.
